Tried Horses
There are various ways to get involved in horse racing, and one of the most common is by investing in a tried horse. These are horses that are currently racing and have a proven track record. Depending on your goals, a tried horse can be a great option as you have a good idea of what you are getting and can typically be at the races within 4 to 12 weeks. Typically, the more you spend on a tried horse, the better the horse will be, assuming the person selecting the horse has knowledge of the industry.
Hidden Valley Thoroughbreds can assist you with potential purchases and provide an extra layer of risk management. We also have a vast range of connections and networks worldwide, which helps us to make informed decisions.

Breeding
The breeding of thoroughbreds is an exciting and rewarding aspect of the industry. At Hidden Valley we have extensive experience and knowledge in breeding and can guide you through the process.
One way to get involved in breeding is to buy a share in a broodmare. This allows you to share the costs of breeding with co-owners and be a part of the process from start to finish. We also offer packages that cater to different budgets, so you can find one that fits your needs. Additionally, we retain a share in the breeding program as well to ensure our commitment to the success of the breeding program.
We have a solid track record of success. We have had very good results in our commercial selling efforts over the past three years leading Australian trainers purchasing our horses at Magic Millions and Inglis sales. This is a testament to our commitment and expertise in the breeding of thoroughbreds.
If you are interested in learning more about the breeding side of the thoroughbred industry, we would be happy to answer any questions and help you get involved. Hidden Valley Thoroughbreds is dedicated to assisting individuals who are passionate about breeding and would like to explore this exciting and satisfying aspect of the thoroughbred industry.
Sales Preparation
The ideal time period for yearling preparation from paddock to sale ring is 10-12 weeks. The process starts by bringing the yearlings into boxes and teaching them to tie up. During the first week, they are introduced to grooming tools, a light cotton rug, and a bit for about 2 hours a day. They are also put out in a day yard to graze with the bit in for an hour or so.
By the second week, they should be shod in front only, ready to go on the walking machine or have a light lunge. They are also introduced to the wash bay and spend more time hand walking. By the third week, their time on the walker or lunging increases and they are taught to lead up well. By the fourth week, they should be starting to look physically well and their coats should be starting to bloom. In the final weeks, they continue with their exercise program, manes are pulled, and tails trimmed up. They should also be well-handled enough for a vet to perform 42 x-rays required by the sales companies.
Foal Education
Our foal education program is designed to introduce our foals to learning in a natural and stress-free manner. By teaching the foal behaviors that come naturally to them, we minimize physical and mental stress. Once the behaviors are learned, we then gradually increase the stress to strengthen them. This approach prepares your foal to handle a greater amount of stress as they progress towards becoming a champion.
Our foals will be comfortable with:
- Being approached and touched all over
- Being haltered
- Coming forward off pressure
- Leading in circles around the mare
- Reining back
- Having its feet picked up and balancing while doing so
Our program uses gentle and scientifically proven training methods to prepare the foal for a life of human interaction.
Leasing
Thoroughbred Leasing is a unique concept in the horse racing industry that allows individuals or groups to form partnerships and lease well-bred colts and fillies to race. The goal of Thoroughbred Leasing is to make horse racing ownership available to a wider range of people by making it more affordable and accessible. This is achieved by a low-cost administration fee to set up the partnership or lease.
The lessor, or owner, works with the manager to determine the initial trainer and terms of the lease.. The percentage of prize money the lessor will receive is usually 30%. The trainer, in conjunction with the manager, determines the racing program for the horse. The manager acts as a liaison between the lessor and lessees, handling all communication and transactions. Lessees can also terminate their interest in a lease at any time with one month’s notice in writing.
Furthermore, lessees will have full rights to attend and participate in race days as an owner would. Overall, Thoroughbred Leasing allows individuals to experience the thrill and excitement of horse racing ownership without the high cost and long-term commitment.
